Design Engineer

As part of our applied technology division, you will be expected to develop designs using parametric 3D modelling techniques and produce 2D construction drawings for various BAR projects.
 
Responsibilities will include:

  • Design Development – Developing elegant and innovative design solutions under the guidance of the project team
  • Parametric Modelling – Producing robust parametric models and assemblies using Siemens NX design suite.
  • 2D Drafting – The production of concise, well detailed, high quality construction drawings- mechanical, composite and assemblies using a combination of Siemens NX and AutoCAD
  • Engineering Calculations- Undertake engineering calculations in support of design concept development.

We are looking for an intelligent, professional engineer, with particular attention to the following personal attributes:

  • Intelligent and technically sharp - high grade Engineering degree or similar level qualification from a reputable university and a minimum of 2 years’ experience in industry
  • Experience:
    • Be able to demonstrate the ability to take designs from concept stage to completion.
    • Experienced in the use of high end parametric modelling packages preferable Siemens NX.
    • Competent user of AutoCAD or NX Drafting
    • An understanding of composite structures and production construction techniques an advantage
    • Experience in Structural Design/Finite Element Analysis will be a plus
  • The ability to develops concepts, exploring multiply development paths, rationally assessing each before developing final detailed designs
  • High standard of care and attention to the quality of your work - including good practice record keeping, documentation, standards / conventions.
  • Mature, responsible, autonomous, team player 

The ability to work well under pressure and keep to deadlines are both central to this role, along with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Electrical & Control Systems Engineer

As part of our applied technology division, your role will be to lead the development of the control systems - in particular the electronics, electrical distribution and control software - on our customer marine vessel projects.  

Responsibilities will include:

  • Specification & System Architecture - hydraulic & electrical component sizing, schematic layout, control strategy definition. Liaison with design engineers in detail design of components to ensure the whole system behaves correctly.
  • Control architecture - definition of the control layout of the boat (controllers, communication busses, HMI, hierarchy, component selection). Design of software architecture for saleability, robustness, and ease of development.
  • Electrical Distribution system – harness definition and specification including sizing, fusing, ingress protection, etc.
  • Embedded Code - Writing control code in C, Simulink, and other similar packages. Testing this code in SIL / HIL test environments.
  • Analysis & Simulation - up-front simulation of the systems using Simulink or other appropriate tools. Drivecycle and load model definition. Optimisation and "virtual design loop" for new ideas ahead of introduction in hardware.
  • Calibration & setup - commissioning of the system on our rigs and boats.
  • Testing & development - running tests on boats and rigs to develop the system - including planning, execution, analysis & reporting.
  • Management of partners - we work closely with an external consultancy in this area. Your role would include working alongside them and managing their workload (we anticipate a work-split with them in this area).  

We are looking for an experienced, intelligent, professional engineer, with particular attention to the following personal attributes:

  • Intelligent and technically sharp - high grade MEng or similar level qualification from a reputable university.
  • Experience:
    • Designing and commissioning performance-critical electrical and / or hydraulic control systems in a similar field - e.g. Automotive, Aerospace, or Marine.
    • Writing and calibrating embedded code - ideally both in C and Simulink.
    • Writing plant-model simulations in a physical modelling tool (such as Simulink, Dymola, Amesim or similar)
  • Whole-system understanding: including electrical, hydraulic, control, calibration, and mechanical aspects. 
  • High standard of care and attention to the quality of your work - including good practice record keeping, documentation, standards / conventions, and source control.
  • Mature, responsible, autonomous, team player - capable of leading a development project.  

The ability to work well under pressure and keep to deadlines are both central to this role, along with excellent interpersonal and communication skills.

Senior Design Engineer/Naval Architect  

As part of our applied technology division and reporting to the head of applied technologies, you will be expected to take a project lead role with responsibility for the progression of designs from concept to delivery, you will liaise with various specialist departments within BAR, prepare and track design deliverable schedules, guide the design efforts of junior team members and communicate both internally and with clients and yards.  

Responsibilities will include:

  • Design development – This is not purely a project management role you will be expected to take a hands on roll developing design concepts and the management/development of parametric models, some 2D drafting may also be required at times.
  • Naval Architecture – undertake stability calculations, classification society submissions, weight estimation, initial structural sizing calculations etc.
  • Design coordination- coordinating project specific design efforts from various teams such as structural engineering, system engineering, performance and simulation teams.
  • Drawing release management and coordination- ensuring the timely release of design deliverables.
  • Interaction with the wider design team
    • Structural engineers to provide detailed structural scantlings
    • Designers and draftsmen to provide parametric design and drawing support
    • Simulation team provide performance, sea keeping and response predictions
    • Systems team to design and develop relevant control systems  

We are looking for an experienced, intelligent, professional engineer, with particular attention to the following personal attributes:

  • Experience:
    • Highly experienced in parametric modelling- experience in Siemens NX a distinct advantage.
    • Proven track record taking designs from concept to delivery Experience in managing projects to a high standard
    • A good understanding of composite structures and production construction techniques
    • Experience in Structural Design/Finite Element Analysis, Fluid Dynamics, Performance Prediction or Control Engineering will be a plus
  • High standard of care and attention to the quality of your work - including good practice record keeping, documentation, standards / conventions.
  • Mature, responsible, autonomous, team player - capable of leading a small development team  

The ability to work well under pressure and keep to deadlines are both central to this role, along with excellent interpersonal and communication both within the team and to clients’ skills.
